Get Yourself Kitted Out For Skiing This Winter

Skiing and snowboarding are arguably the most fun sports you can do during the winter months, but the nature of environment means it’s highly important to be kitted up in the correct way.
Here we run though some of the essential garments that will make your winter sports holiday more enjoyable than it’s already going to be!

Ski Jackets

Don’t skimp on this item of clothing, it will keep you warm and dry and some might say more importantly, make you look like you know what you’re doing too. The great thing about a good ski jacket is that you can use it when you are off the slopes too.

Ski Pants

Ensure you treat this item with the same respect as your jacket. Waterproof, breathable and good quality are the basics. Choose a padded version for extra warmth although if you purchase a ‘shell’ (without insulation), good thermal underwear will ensure you stay warm in all but the very coldest conditions. The best bet is to buy your ski pants at the same time as your jacket, as this way you make sure you look just right on the slopes.

Mid-Layer

Don’t be tempted to drag out your old woolly sweater you’ve had kicking around for years. Either a synthetic fleece material or a mix of materials which could include wool (especially Merino wool with its tight knit) is idea. The mid-layer garment is another which can be used for casual wear in the evenings, so make sure you like the colours!

Base-Layer

It’s worth investing money in a proper base layer garment that keeps your skin dry. It might be cold outside but you’ll get a sweat up as you ski, the moisture can then make you feel cold when you stop and get on a ski lift. A good base layer will ‘wick’ the moisture away from the ski, dispersing it into your mid-layer garment, keeping you warmer throughout the day.

Ski Gloves

Possibly the most essential item on your list. Purchase the very best ski gloves you can get, make sure they fit your hands correctly (check your size) and ensure they are waterproof and breathable. It’s rare to feel extreme cold when you go skiing because of the physical element involved, but the extremities (hand, feet and head) need to be more protected than anywhere else in the coldest weather.

Ski Socks

Do not wear your normal sports socks because they will rub against your skin and cause pain. Invest in proper ski socks that are designed to fit under your boots, they will keep your feet warmer, drier and far more comfortable.

Ski Helmet

More and more people are choosing to wear a helmet when they ski and although it’s not essential, it’s certainly a good idea to use one on the slopes. Ski Helmets have become lighter and more comfortable to wear and provide that extra protection in the rare event of a possible head injury.

Ski Goggles

A pair of sunglasses is useful on a ski holiday, especially when sitting around on a terrace at lunchtime when the sun is shining. But there is no supplement for a pair of ski goggles in any other weather condition experienced, especially when it’s snowing heavily. Don’t consider going on a skiing holiday without a pair of goggles and even when the sun is shining, stick them in your pocket as you never know when it’s going to change.

Ski Hat

Even though you might choose to ski in a helmet, a good ski hat is still a must have for any ski holiday. Ski hats are made from a variety of fabrics including wool and polyester, usually the most important factor though is that you like the way they look.
