Skiing is one of those sports which is enjoyed by men and women alike all across the globe. One of the best things about it is the social interaction between your fellow skiers whilst on the snow slopes, on a lift or in a bar at the end of the day.

But, do men and women ski alike? In my opinion there are subtle differences and some obvious ones too. To generalise, men of course do tend to ski faster than women (I’m generalising!)But men, eager to impress can sometimes push themselves a little too far for their own good.

Also, women’s physiology differs a bit from mens (Yes really it’s true) and in fact, this can be an advantage for women skiers. Technically the world’s top women’s skiers are more precise than their male counterparts. This is in part due to the shape of the body and the pelvis. In the technical disciplines like slalom and giant slalom, women’s ski technique is often superior than male skiers.

These are some of the reasons why dedicated women’s lessons are becoming more popular. Understanding of the physiological and physiological requirements for women skiers means that these lessons can be focused on producing results to improve technique. Also, when a common interest to overcome potential difficulties with ski technique is presented to a an instructor that understands the issues, a more fluid and product solution can be found.

One of the leading ski schools that promote and run dedicated female only sessions is the snow centre in Hemel Hempstead.

Ladies’ night is held every Tuesday from 7.30pm – 9pm. For only £32 (£22 for members), female skiers and snowboarders can get a 1.5 hour lesson from one of the BASI qualified instructors. All the equipment needed (skis/snowboard, boots, poles, and helmet) is included. There will be a friendly atmosphere so you can meet similar minded women and after the lesson all attendees will get a free drink at The EDGE café.

There are structured lessons available that will train beginners up to and including Level 4. For ladies who are of a recreational standard already, there will be special coaching sessions available. Snowboarders can learn all sorts of new tricks on the snow slopes and skiers can develop more accuracy when it comes to parallel skiing, practice clean carved turns and learn to cross bumps elegantly.

For more information or to book, visit www.thesnowcentre.com or call 0845 258 900.

Once you have mastered your technique on the snow slopes of Hemel and decide to head off to the mountains, there are plenty of programs available in ski schools that focus on women’s groups.

If you have had some experiences with women’s only ski lessons or groups do let us know your thoughts.
