Crucial Four Days for British Ski and Snowboard Athletes

The next four days are crucial for several British Ski and Snowboard athletes who are still looking to make the qualifying standard in order to secure a nomination to Team GB for the Sochi Olympic Winter Games.

Yesterday saw Mogul skier Ellie Koyander compete at the Lake Placid World Cup. Ellie didn’t make the finals but was ranked 23rd overall. She will now compete again on Sunday in the Val St Come World Cup in Canada.

Today sees Emily Sarsfield currently racing in the Ski Cross World Cup taking place in Val Thorens, France after qualifying yesterday. Sarsfield needs a good result today as she tries to get into the top 32 on the FIS Olympic Quota list. Team mates Pam Thorburn, Ed Drake and Peter Whelan unfortunately didn’t make it through qualification.

It is an important weekend for Chemmy Alcott who is due to return to World Cup competition in Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy. Dave Ryding competes in the Wengen Alpine World Cup, racing Slalom on Sunday. Dougie Crawford and TJ Baldwin will compete in the Wengen World Cup in Super Combined tomorrow and the Downhill on Saturday. The Zell am See Men’s Europa Cup will see Jack Gower and Nick Moynihan competing in Slalom and Giant Slalom, on the 18th and 19th respectively.

The freestyle snowboarders compete in Stoneham, Canada this weekend. It is a crucial event for Aimee Fuller and Katie Ormerod who try and move up the FIS Olympic Quota List to secure nomination to Team GB for Snowboard Slopestyle. They compete in Friday’s qualification round with the finals on Sunday, alongside Jamie Nicholls and Sam Turnbull in the men’s Snowboard Slopestyle. Jenny Jones and Billy Morgan, who have both met the Olympic Qualifying Standard, will remain in Breckenridge to train. Dom Harington and Ben Kilner also compete in the Snowboard Halfpipe competition with qualification today and the finals on Saturday.

Some of the freestyle skiers are in Gstaad, Switzerland on Saturday for the Ski Slopestyle World Cup. It is a key event for Anna Vincenti and Tyler Harding who are aiming for results that will help them meet the requirements to be nominated for Olympic selection. Katie Summerhayes who has met the Olympic Qualifying Standard already also competes in Gstaad.

After competing in Val St Come on Tuesday, Harry Gillam and Lloyd Wallace compete in the Lake Placid Aerials World Cup on Saturday.

In Cross Country Andrew Young and Andrew Musgrave are competing in the Norwegian Championships in Lillehammer. Racing starts today through to Sunday. Callum Smith and Alex Standen are racing in the Swiss Championships in Leysin this weekend. For the women, Posy Musgrave, Fiona Hughes and Annika Taylor also race in the Swiss Championships on Saturday and Sunday.

In Telemark, Jaz Taylor has become the British Women’s Champion with James French taking the men’s title.
